Geneva waives residence requirement
In a letter to Mr. Carlo Lamprecht, member of the Geneva government, the
Chamber suggests that the requirement to take up residence in the Canton is
discriminatory and should be repealed. While EU and EFTA nationals may take up
residence in the canton they wish, third country nationals, including U.S.
citizens are still asked to first take up residence in the Canton.

In his reply of November 18, 2003, Mr. Lamprecht confirms that the competent
Geneva labor market authorities no longer necessarily subject the granting of a
work permit to non-EU/EFTA nationals to the condition to take up residence on
Geneva territory, i.e. that since the entry into force of the Bilateral
Agreements, any person wishing to take up residence out the canton of Geneva may
do so provided that the request is substantiated.
