	Swiss – US Relations: Challenges and Perspectives
	Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker:	Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard,  Vice President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Department of Economic Affairs
	Curriculum Vitae:	As Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (FDEA), Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard is one of the seven members of the Federal Council, the executive authority of the Swiss Government. In 2009, Federal Councillor Leuthard is also the Vice-President of the Federal Council. The FDEA is the competence centre of the Swiss Government for all core issues related to economic affairs and trade policies. In her capacity as its head, Mrs. Leuthard is responsible for the Doha Round negotiations of the World Trade Organization. While Switzerland places a priority on multilateralism in its foreign economic policy, it defends its special interests through bilateral free trade agreements. At a domestic level, the FDEA's goal is to create the regulatory framework and economic policy conditions that enable Swiss and foreign companies located in Switzerland to prosper. Mrs. Leuthard is also responsible for matters relating to employment, professional education and training, technology and innovation. A main objective is to establish a favourable environment for creating jobs by establishing flexible labour market conditions. Another policy priority is to ease access to the labour market for young people, women and older workers. The Federal Office for Agriculture and the Federal Veterinary Office are also part of the FDEA. Through "Agricultural Policy 2011," Mrs. Leuthard is seeking to make Swiss agriculture more competitive by gradually opening it to free market requirements while respecting sustainable development. Prior to assuming her current position as Head of the FDEA on 1 August 2006, Mrs. Leuthard had been a member of the National Council for seven years and President of the Christian Democratic People's Party from 2004. During her time in the National Council, she was a member of the committees for legal affairs, political institutions, judicial affairs and economic affairs and taxation. Mrs. Leuthard was born in 1963 and is a lawyer by training. She is married to Dr. Roland Hausin, a research chemist.

	Curriculum Vitae:	Stephen S. Morse, Ph.D. is Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, and was Founding Director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness, at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. He also holds an Adjunct Faculty appointment in The Rockefeller University (Lederberg Lab). In 1996-2000 (on loan from Columbia), he was Program Manager for Biodefense at the federal Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where his portfolio included co-directing the “Pathogen Countermeasures” program, and directing the “Advanced Diagnostics” program as well as DARPA’s research collaborations with Russian scientists. Before that, he was Assistant Professor (Virology) in The Rockefeller University, New York. He chaired the 1989 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Conference on Emerging Viruses, for which he originated the term and concept of “emerging viruses”, and was a member of the “Committee on Emerging Microbial Threats to Health” at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences (IOM). Dr. Morse was founding Chair of ProMED (the international Program to Monitor Emerging Diseases) and of its international e-mail listserv, “ProMED-mail”, as well as a founding Section Editor of the CDC journal “Emerging Infectious Diseases”. He currently serves on the Steering Committee of the IOM “Forum on Microbial Threats” and on several government advisory groups and journal editorial boards. He is an elected life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the American College of Epidemiology, the New York Academy of Sciences (and a past Chair of its Microbiology Section), the New York Academy of Medicine, and a member of the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. “American Scientist” selected his book Emerging Viruses (Oxford University Press, 1993) for its list of “The Top 100 Science Books of the Century”. Dr. Morse received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests include global health, biodefense, and the epidemiology and surveillance of emerging infectious diseases, including pandemic influenza.
