On November 25, 1850, only two years after the foundation of
the Swiss Confedera tion in its present form, the signature of the Convention of
friendship, commerce and extradition opened a long series of treaties,
conventions and agreements between the United States and Switzerland on various
matters. Since the democratic and fed erative Swiss constitution of 1848, shaped
after the American model, contrasted with the autocratic governments of Austria,
France, Prussia and Russia, the fact that Switzerland concluded its first
general convention with the United States had a spe cial meaning: President
Taylor of the United States wished to extend to Switzerland “a fraternal hand in
the very midst of the storms with which she was threatened, and to offer her a
treaty of friendship whereby the two freest peoples on earth will treat each
other reciprocally on a footing of equality” (President Furrer of the Swiss
Con-federation in a message to the Swiss Federal Assembly).
