Swiss work permit rules - Introduction

Two significantly different regimes govern Swiss residence
and work permits:
(i) for EC nationals, based on the Agreement and the Protocol on the Free
Movement of Persons between Switzerland and the European Community, including
the new member states,
and
(ii) for third country nationals.
Residence and work permits are exclusively issued by the
cantons. Permits are subject to quantitative limitations (quota system).
